To fulfill the needs of equine breeders, owners, and trainers, we have the best quality horse metal barns.

Being made out of metal, it is sturdy, robust in nature, able to tolerate extreme weather events, and can withstand daily wear and tear for the longest period. Steel barns are known for their durability and longevity, which need minimal aftercare. So, let’s see how you can prepare your horse metal barn for a spring clean.

Here Are the Top 7 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Horse Metal Barn In Florida

1. Consider Decluttering

Springtime is the best time to clean the entire barn. The temperature is pleasing, and work can be done easily without sweating in the sun. So, let’s begin.

  • Remove everything out of your steel horse barn.
  • Next, group them according to use.
  • Remove any broken, malfunctioning items and trash/ recycle them.
  • Clear all clutter that is piled up but is of no use.

Not just the metal horse barn but its contents must also be cleaned. If there are any items in the horse barn that do not belong, now is the perfect time to remove them. Either keep those items in the right place, maybe in your garage or home or donate them if they no longer serve you.

2. Clean Stalls

Stalls are where your horses spend the most time. Hence, it is essential for that place to be in pristine condition. First, remove your horses from their stall and let them out. We’re sure they will enjoy some time in the sunshine in the spring.

  • Remove any manure, its stain, hay remains mat, urine, and other items from the stall. Clean them and put them in the sun to dry.
  • You can use a high-pressure cleaner with hot or cold water to remove any sticky dirt or debris from the stall.
  • Replace bedding, water and food, uneaten hay, and any cobwebs in the upper corner.

Horses must be kept in a clean and dry place. A dirty stall may lead to health issues such as thrush, cellulitis, skin problems, breathing issues, etc. And when done, add fresh bedding.

3. Clean The Entire Barn & Individual Stalls

People often tend to neglect thorough cleaning during winter. Remove any dust, debris, and cobwebs that may be in corners. There is not much required to wash a steel building. You will need the following:

  • A ladder to reach out to the roof
  • Water
  • Mild detergent
  • A soft bristle brush for scraping off any stain
  • A garden hose or a pressure washer at its lowest setting
  • Cloth for cleaning

During cleaning, inspect for minor rust development, faded or scratched paint, holes, gaps, and cracks. If you notice any, fix them promptly.

4. Organize Tack Room

First off, minimize the clutter as much as possible. Now, to organize the tack room, you can install racks, hooks, and shelves to keep items on display. You can keep it as follows:

  • Use Racks/ Shelves To Keep saddles, plastic tubs for storage, bridles, and muck boots.
  • Use Drawers To Keep files and important papers.
  • Use Hooks To Hang: Your overcoat, manure forks, pitchforks, stable broom, spare items, fire extinguishers, and any cords.

You can also add a truck to keep horse blankets, leg wraps, and other add-ons.

5. Check Equipment

While we are on the subject of cleaning, it would be helpful to check all tools and equipment functioning. Check the water supply pipes and another regular tool to see if any light bulbs need replacement or if the vent needs cleaning.

Make a list of items that need to be repaired and replaced. In that way, most items will be examined along with spring cleaning. If any equipment needs serving, do it now.

6. Disinfect Metal Barn

Use a non-toxic solution to kill pathogens and break down any organic matter sticking to the wall or floor. Remember to sanitize the mats, pitchfork, manure fork, and wheelbarrow. Then, allow them to dry in the sun. The intense UV rays will do the best job.

7. Air Dry The Entire Metal Building

Since water is used for cleaning, letting the entire structure air dry is crucial. If you have ceiling or floor fans, you can switch them on to aid drying faster. After the metal barn is completely dry, you can put all the items and stuff back in their place.

Other Things You Might Want To Consider

Perform Grooming

Once the horse metal barn is clean, grooming for equine species is the best time. Horses grow thick coats of hair during winter and shed excess hair when summer starts to arrive. You can use a grooming block or a shedding blade to scrape off the excess hair gently.

You can use a clipper to remove hair from its face and legs. Brush its mane and tails, and then use a fly spray.

Organize | Clean Hay & Feed Storage

If you have a large metal barn with half a dozen or more horses, it is best to have a separate room to keep hay, feed, and water containers. These must also be cleaned and organized on a regular basis. However, since we are on the topic of spring cleaning, remove all hay and feed from the place. Clean it thoroughly. If there is any mold or mildew, remove them quickly.

Finally, a non-toxic disinfectant should be used before air drying and keeping items back in their place.

Clear External Landscaping

Untamed and dirty grass growing just outside your horse metal barn can invite insects and flies, which can carry unhealthy diseases. So, it is best to trim those grasses, clean the landscaping, and maintain them on a monthly basis.

An aesthetically pleasing outdoor will make your barn look more inviting.
