Why Vertical Roof Carports Outshine Traditional Options

Why Vertical Roof Carports Outshine Traditional Options

A sturdy roof is an essential feature of any building for its longevity. The same can be said about metal carports. Although there are many styles of metal roofing you can choose from, one stands out from the rest due to its endurance, ease of cleaning, and smooth flow of air and water. We are talking about vertical roof carports here. Let’s give this a more thorough examination.

What Are Vertical Roof Carports?

A vertical roof is an A-frame design with roof panels laid from the top to the eaves. Its welded transition from roof to legs makes it stronger and more stable. It is suitable for areas with extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall or snowfall and high-speed wind.

The vertical corrugated panels are aligned with each other in such a way that water or snow slides off smoothly toward the ground. This prevents debris accumulation and moisture build-up. Hence preventing it from rusting.

But Why Choose Metal Vertical Roofing?

  • It is the sturdiest structure compared to traditional materials.
  • It can withstand all-weather phenomena without compromising its structural integrity.
  • Its durability stands ahead of others.
  • Cleaning vertical metal roofs is easy and less often.
  • Most areas with extreme weather require vertical roofing for metal structures.

1: Better Drainage

Vertical corrugated metal panels provide excellent drainage for rainwater and snow. This makes it suitable for areas prone to extreme weather conditions. Vertical roofs also allow water to fall off quickly. It reduces the chances of water logging and the risk of rusting.

2: Aero Dynamical Design

The ridges of vertical roof carports are designed perpendicular to the ground to make water pass smoothly into the gutter. Air draft can also pass seamlessly without bumping into material. So the structure won’t become airborne. The design must meet and exceed the wind load capacity required by local building codes and zoning laws.

Note: When buying metal carports, only accept galvanized steel (not aluminum or tin) certified by an engineer, especially if you live in hurricane or tornado prone areas.

You can choose a pitch suited to your location. To withstand wind, opt for a roof with a 30° angle. This will resist uplift and make the structure more stable. To prevent leakage and ice dam formation, choose roof slopes lower than 4:12. At this slope, snow will creep rather than slide, making it easy to manage. Slopes between 4:12 and 6:12 with rough-textured material work best.

3: Long Lasting

Water passes by seamlessly, and dirt & debris do not accumulate on the roof. Therefore, the chances of moisture build-up and rusting are reduced. Cleaning is also not required very often. This makes the carport long-lasting.

4: Don’t Need Frequent Cleaning

The metal panel is non-porous and has less friction. Because of this, dirt and debris fall off the roof smoothly and easily toward the ground, so it does not need frequent cleaning.

If you have to clean, you can use warm water with mild detergent and a garden hose. To remove any stain or bird’s poop, you can use a soft bristle brush.

5: Customizable

You can customize vertical roof carports in any way you want. Add or remove some of the features mentioned below to customize them according to your needs.

Additional Features That You Can Add To Vertical Roof Carports

  1. Reflective Paint: This type of paint redirects most of the sunlight away from the roof, keeping the interior cooler than the surrounding area.
  2. Light Color Paint for Roof: If reflective paint costs a bit much, how about adding light color for the same effect?
  3. Ridge Cap: It is installed at the joining of the two panels at the topmost part of the roof. It helps secure the vertical panels and protect them from water seepage.
  4. Fans: Even though metal carports are open structures, electric fans help with air circulation inside, especially in hot summers.
  5. Lighting: For natural lighting, you can add ridge lights or skylights. For lighting after sunset, add light fixtures on posts or LED string lights.
  6. Gutter: A gutter facilitates the flow of water from the roof toward a deposition tank without falling overhead. You can also attach a downspout to it.
  7. Gable Ends: The front and back of the carport are generally open, but if you want extra protection from direct sun and rain, consider adding gable ends.
  8. Sidewalls: The same can be said about the side walls. You can get either a 3 ft. cover or fully-covered side walls.

Note: Under IBC (International Building Codes) guidelines, any carport with more than two sides completely covered will be regarded as a garage.
